A letter that never came
A poem
She waited days, months, years
For a letter from her son.
Walking down the path
To the mailbox
Every morning before light
Every evening before dark.
Never giving up hope,
Never faltering in her faith.
Attending engagements, weddings, christenings
Bearing the weight she carried.
Waiting patiently for word
Written lines to say he was safe
Expect him home soon.
Friends and family moved on
Children became parents.
Still she waited,
Walking down to the mailbox
Every morning before light
Every evening before dark.
Visiting friends in nursing homes,
Attending funerals.
Always filled with hope.
Lying on her deathbed
His beautiful smiling face
Suddenly appear
To fill her heart with joy.
Finally, no need for a letter.
She’s going home
With her baby boy.

Life is a very short trip. This is quite a profound piece
