A magical quilt Handstitched with blood-soaked cotton Pieces of darkness and light Hidden in every block Created with ritual A quill-written spell In flowing script Folded and tucked away Ancestral lore woven In every pattern Labored by candlelight A beloved’s lock of hair Sewn in a pocket Soaked with tears An embroidered Ankh The key of life bridges The here to beyond Obscured by appliqués Symbols of magic adorn the hand-crafted gift Messages that will follow The essence of its intended Never-ending journey
I googled quilts & quilting, and saw and read about this amazing craft. The inclusion of “keepsake” I thought was particularly poignant. I learnt something new, which is always pleasing. 🙏
what a mesmerizing montage, rea. i love the idea of linen as language - rule-bound (with exceptions everywhere) and riddled with meaning behind every locked door. so spellbinding.
Love this homage - an elder poet we published has African patchwork dolls on a museum tour- such a rich language- love the inclusion of the quilt on the bed- my grandmother sewed so many
I love this idea. It is the thread that brings us together. My mother added a lock of my Great grandmother's hair wrapped in a ribbon into a family album she created for me.
A wonderful way to see quilting. Beautiful Rea
