Angst
The unseen enemy
My heart hammers in my chest Bone-chilling dread floods my body My lungs are constricted I’m dying A god-awful terror wells up The danger is inside me Exposed to an invisible threat Nowhere to hide Like a sinuous snake Death crawled through My vulnerable walls Madness its companion Sanity is slipping away Thoughts of escape racing Away from the horror The enemy in my mind Imagination running rampant Creating senseless havoc A frenzy of hysteria With paralyzing angst

Beautiful, heart-brreaking poem, Rea. I love this piece of work. The following stanza stood out to me, although each of your stanzas are beautiful:
Like a sinuous snake
Death crawled through
My vulnerable walls
Madness its companion
So rich in imagery, and yes, death and madness are related.
Imagination is truly remarkable but it's also truly awful when it turns against us. Great poem, Rea.
