My dad used to say whippersnappers 😂 I love that

I was wondering if it's English what I read, haha! Thanks for teaching us, Rea! Great output! 🤍

Haha!! I wondered if the dictionary was right. Thank you, Valle!

My favourite word is “discombobulate”. I never thought I would see that word in a poem!

A wonderful selection of “off beat” words in today’s poetry.

Rea de Miranda's avatar

I wonder if I should explain the words. Some of them I didn’t know existed. : )

Mark Farley’s wandering’s's avatar

It’s more fun looking them up!

Rea de Miranda's avatar

I was in a mood to play, Mark. Thank you for enjoying it. : )

Lol. Good. Another to add to your collection. A young woman I knew loved children and affectionately called, “crumbsnatchers.”. From her grandmother.

Rea de Miranda's avatar

Crumbsnatchers! That’s a good one, Daniel! : )

Thanks! In my younger years I wanted to put together a volume of regional colloquialisms sayings specific nomenclature slang.

Rea de Miranda's avatar

You can still do it, Daniel!

Daniel Hettenbach's avatar

Oh no. I'm okay. I'm a Poet. I'm good.

Rhea,

Lovely, creative poem. I love the way you play with words, so creative!

As is the case with Maddie, my dad used to say whippersnappers, too. And now, to tease my teenage daughter, I use it to describe her and her friends!

That’s what they are! Thank you, Beth! : )

Whippersnappers is one of the best words ever. Hehe. Great poem, Rea. I've never heard of bafflegab. Ha.

Rea de Miranda's avatar

Thank you, Parker. There are lots of fun words we never use.

Some of my faves. "Kerfuffle" might be the only missing one. You might like John Koenig's book Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, where he makes up words. He inspired this one I concocted: "metamournphosis." Love your poem.

Rea de Miranda's avatar

I downloaded it this morning, Elaine! Oh yes, I forgot about kerfuffle. I love your word. It makes perfect sense. The metamorphosis of mourning! Brilliant.

I had to look up “discombobulate” and also “absquatulate” 😁.

Rea de Miranda's avatar

I knew only a few of them, Luis! I’m ashamed to say. Haha!!

Rea,

this poem is like a linguistic carnival 😁

colorful, slightly mad, and surprisingly precise.

Not only did you unearth word-gems most people consider extinct,

but you also managed to weave them into a chillingly current image:

a world full of loud nonsense-speakers

who vanish the moment silence and truth arrive.

That “sonder” at the end — like a flash of conscience arriving too late.

And yet it stays.

Like the shadow of those who lacked the courage to remain.

Brilliant.🙏🏼

And one more bonus 😁I read it out loud.

My mouth now feels like it just finished a session of linguistic acrobatics.

Thank you for that dance.

Reading it aloud had the same effect on me, Dora! Thank you for enjoying this madness. It was a bit of silly fun for a change. : )

Rea,

madness it may be … but the kind that sharpens thought while making you smile.

I’d gladly read more of that, anytime. :)
