Guilt is the added burden we place upon ourselves. Like you said a useless emotion. I think and I may be wrong that we use guilt to mask the anger over a situation out of our control.
I have carried guilt for different reasons, yet those same what if`s and could haves are the same.

You sound like an absolutely amazing, dedicated, loving and supportive mother. I hope you never, ever forget that.
Guilt is a hard teacher. It shows us the lessons we don't want to learn. I am glad you were able to come to terms with all of this. I know the guilt still resides under the surface and that will never go away. But I am glad you were able to remain strong and know that your son knew and knows where your heart truly lies.
