Wind-up Toy
Do you think I’m your little wind-up toy?
Winding me up when you want to play
A huge smile painted on my tiny tin face
My mechanical legs are marching
To the beat of your little drums
Left right, left right
Do I seem animated to you?
Turn my key and let’s find out
My arms swing with rapid staccato
My plastered smile grins grimly
Left right, left right
When my spring is wound down
You fold me up and pack me away
In my little handcrafted blackwood box
Till the next time you need my legs to march
Left right, left right
While you sleep, I crawl out of my handcrafted blackwood box
I kiss you with my painted blood-red smile
Before I take all your memories
Walking away from your ruin
With my little mechanical legs pumping
Left right, left right.

Thank you for this enthusiastic comment, Simona!! You make my heart sing. 💞💞
Why was this the last thing I read in the early hours?
‘Last thing’ as in before I slept, not last thing before being bumped off this mortal coil.
Whilst I enjoyed the read, thank you, I’ll be sleeping with the lights on for the time being…
